From the Pastor: February 2019

PastorNews & Events, Pastor's Blog

I wanted to make you aware of a couple of things coming up rather soon.

February 23-26, 2019 the General Conference of the United Methodist Church will meet in St. Louis, Missouri. The only topic on the agenda for consideration has to do with the church’s stance on homosexuality. The Way Forward Commission has spent 18 months discussing how the UMC can move forward on this issue. The commission has tendered to the Council of Bishops a plan titled the One Church Plan. This plan would allow congregations and conferences latitude on how they minister within their ministry context. There is also a Three branch plan, a Traditionalist Plan and a Simple Plan which may be considered. The future of the UMC will be impacted by the decisions made at the General Conference.

On February 17, 2019 at 12:15 p.m., University Park UMC will have a listening/informational session in their fellowship hall. You are invited and encouraged to attend if you would like more in-depth information. There will be members of the North Texas Delegation present at that meeting.

The Other thing I wanted to make you aware of is during Lent, we will have a combined Adult Sunday School that will meet in the fellowship hall at 9:30 on Sunday mornings. We will be studying Adam Hamilton’s new book, Simon Peter. Charlotte Echols and myself will team teach this study. I want to encourage you to make plans to be a part as we journey through Lent with this study. The books have been ordered and we will get those into your hands as soon as they come in.

The final thing I wanted to make you aware of is, this year we are combining a Fat Tuesday celebration with an Ash Wednesday observance. We are calling it, Fat Ash Tuesday. On March 5, 2019 we will celebrate Fat Tuesday in the fellowship hall with red beans & rice, fried fish, gumbo, king cake, we will also have some grilled chicken for those who do not eat fish/seafood.

This will be a come and go affair, and as you leave I will be available to impose ashes on your forehead as you begin observing Lent. We are hoping to make this a really big celebration.

We are inviting the CDC parents, children and staff, as well as folks from the elementary school. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. You will be hearing more about this in the coming weeks.

Blessings and Peace,
Pastor Tom
